Privacy

The short version: your photos never leave your device, and pal8 has no idea who you are.

Last updated 20 August 2026

pal8 has no accounts, no sign-up and no server of its own. Every colour it reads is computed on your device. Nothing you point the camera at is uploaded, stored remotely, or seen by anyone — including us.

What pal8 does with your camera

When you open the camera, your browser or the app asks your permission first. If you allow it, the live video feed is read frame by frame to work out which colours are in view. That analysis happens entirely inside your device's own memory.

Frames are never written to a server, never sent over the network, and never retained after the frame has been analysed. When you capture a card, the resulting image is created on your device and handed to your own share sheet or downloads folder — pal8 does not receive a copy.

The same is true of a photo you pick from your gallery, or one you send to pal8 through the Android share sheet: it is read locally, its colours are extracted, and it is discarded when you leave the screen.

What is stored on your device

pal8 keeps a small amount of information in your browser's or app's own local storage, so it can remember your work between visits. This never leaves your device and is not readable by us.

Removing it

On the web, clearing site data for pal8.in in your browser settings erases all of the above. In the Android app, use Settings → Apps → pal8 → Storage → Clear storage, or simply uninstall the app. Either action is immediate and complete, and no copy survives anywhere else.

Analytics

pal8 uses Google Analytics 4 to understand, in aggregate, how the app is used — which features people reach for, whether a screen is confusing, how many people open it at all. This is the only thing pal8 sends over the network.

What Google Analytics receives:

What it never receives: your photos, your camera feed, your saved palettes, your name, your email address, or anything you typed. There is no advertising on pal8, no ad network, and nothing is sold or shared with third parties for marketing.

If you would rather not be counted, most browsers offer a tracking-blocking setting or extension that stops Analytics loading, and pal8 continues to work perfectly with it blocked. Google's own description of how it handles this data is at policies.google.com/privacy.

Working offline

pal8 is built to work with no connection at all. The web version caches itself so it keeps running offline; the Android app ships with everything already inside it. When there is no network, no analytics are sent and nothing is queued for later — those events are simply lost, which is the correct outcome.

Children

pal8 is a general-audience tool and is not directed at children under 13. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, of any age, because it does not collect personal information at all.

Your rights

Because pal8 holds no account and stores nothing about you on any server, there is no personal data of yours for us to look up, export, correct or delete — the only data that exists is on your own device, and it is yours to erase at any moment using the steps above.

If you are in a region with data protection rights such as the GDPR or the DPDP Act, and you want to exercise them in relation to the analytics data described above, write to hello@pal8.in and it will be handled.

Permissions the Android app requests

PermissionWhy
CAMERATo read colours from the live view. Asked for the first time you open the camera, and refusable — the rest of the app still works.
INTERNETUsed only to send the anonymous analytics events described above. The app itself runs entirely offline.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that affects what pal8 collects, the date at the top of this page changes with it, and the change will be noted in the app's release notes. Material changes will not be applied retroactively to data already collected.
